Yay, my second year of Yuletide, and I am still just as ridiculously excited to be playing \o/
Hello dear secret yuletide writer, I can't wait to see what you come up with! :D I'll ramble on for a bit about my requests, now, but just remember that 1) Most of all, I want you to have fun with it, and 2) I might seem pretty specific in some of the requests, but really, I'm just brainstorming ,and I also love to be surprised! :)
First of all, some general stuff:
As you maybe can tell from my intial requests, I am a sucker for backstories. I love being given explanations for how characters have become who they are, and what they think of the world surrounding them. I love to see writers step outside of the show/movie/book and make up their own stories (pre- or post-), and create OCs if they like. I love first-time stories, I love stories that have some conflict or tension, and I love stories that explore rarely seen or untraditional aspects of the fandom/characters.
I like showing not telling. I'm not much into graphic sex if it doesn't play into a plot. I love detail and realism (even in sci-fi/fantasy fandoms *g*). I must admit to having a preference for a third person narrative, as opposed to first person, but this is not set in stone and depends very much on the genre/tone of the story.
Squicks:
I'm pretty easy-going, but I must admit that I'm not a huge kink-person :) And I'm not much for pure fluff, or hard core dark!fic and angst - I guess I like to play in the middle of that scale *g*. One thing that I do not like is character bashing - I prefer all characters to be portrayed as multi-dimensional and complex, and not just plain bad/stupid/wrong.
And now, on to my yuletide wishes:
Shelter:
Characters requested:Shaun
Request details: I am intrigued by Shaun. We know so little about his character. I'd love to hear about his life before Zach - his childhood, his family, coming out, finding his way in the world, being a writer, his lovers, his thoughts on being a gay man, on having children, etc. The other characters are *very* welcome to pop their heads in - but I'd love for the story to be Shaun-centric :) OCs are welcomed, btw!
I'd love to hear some backstory for Shaun. Stuff about his childhood, and what it was like for him to come out, why he is so adamant to emphasise that Larry is his stepfather, how Gabe reacted when he came out and how it initially affected their relationship, what it was like for him to move away from home, what his first romantic and sexual experiences were like, how he became a writer, what he writes about and how he feels about it... This could easily be interwoven with his relationship to Zach, and Cody entering his life, or how he feels about Zach's family, and how his own friends and family react to him and Zach being together. I love all of the characters from Shelter, so they're more than welcome to join - but most of all I would love for the story to give some new insights into Shaun's character :) Oh, and one thing: I have a hard time imagining Shaun as being a typical rich kid, just something about the way he dresses, and the way he seems so much less "preppie" than Gabe... I'm thinking either he didn't grow up with as much money as Gabe, or he doesn't want to associate with that kind of lifestyle?
ETA: Although I didn't put this down in my original request, I just thought I'd mention that I'd also be thrilled to hear Jeanne's backstory, so if you'd rather do that, or would like to include her in a Shaun-centric story, then that's also an option. I really like Jeanne, so I'd wish to see a character study that was sympathetic towards her, without glossing over her her shortcomings. I see her as a person who wasn't prepared for the change in her life that followed after the loss of her parents and the birth of her son. I see her as a feisty and strongwilled woman who's found herself in a completely different situation than she wanted to be in her life, and who's had some rough times and who's found it hard to make the right choices. She's not very good at assuming responsibility, but I think she really loves Cody and Zach, and that it's a sacrifice of love that she gives Zach custody of Cody at the end of the movie, even if he is chosing a lifestyle that she thinks is not good for her son (how awesome would it be, btw, to see some exploration of why she is homophobic, and maybe to see her reconciled with the fact that her son is happy growing up with two dads?)... If you want to write about her, or just include her as a secondary character, that would be fantastic - but I also realise that this was not in my original request :)
The Authority:
Character request: Apollo, Midnighter
Request details: I am so fascinated with Apollo and Midnighter's backstory. What was it like for them on the Bendix team? How did Bendix find them and what did he do to them? What did they first think of each other? What was it like for them being the sole survivors from the team, and how did they cope with living on the street? First-time slash would be awesome, but gen is also cool :)
Apollo/Midnighter is a new passion of mine. I love how they interact in canon, how potty mouthed and unsentimental they are, and then at the same time how devoted they are to each other. I am so taken with the hints we get to their backstory in Stormwatch and The Authority. I'd love to hear more about that. From either Midnighter or Apollo, or both, I am equally in love with each character :) I guess I'm looking for first-time or preslash, here. I'd love to hear the story of how they meet and how they end up being a couple. I'd like to hear how much they remember of who they were before, and what was done to them to make them superhuman, and how they feel about that. I'd love to hear some gritty stories from the Bendix days and living on the street, if you're up for writing that :) I'd also think it was totally cool if they had some sardonic observations about some of the "gay superhero" clichés that are sometimes thrown at them, or the neverending gay-related verbal abuse they often get from their opponents :D
Patrick O' Brian - Aubrey/Maturin Tales:
Character request: Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin
Request details: I have read the first four books of the series so far, and what I love most about M&A is the chemistry between the two main characters, and their fantastic dialogue. I also love how strongly they feel about each other, their mutual respect and affection. If forced to choose, Maturin is probably my favourite character - and I love his adventures as a spy and a doctor, and his obsession with the natural sciences. Feel free to go AU if you like :)
Gen or slash, I just love how these two characters work together, and I get such a thrill out of hearing about their friendship and affection towards one another. I love the subtle humour of the books, the language, the historical detail and the quirks and twists of each character. Anything involving those elements would make me very, very happy. In this fandom, friendship, (unspoken?) attraction and maybe some PG-13 affection would make me mightily thrilled, but I think that straight out NC-17 would befuddle me more than anything *g* Oh, and if you'd like to add fantasy elements to the universe, genderswap (femmeslash!) or science-fiction, go right ahead :D :D
Enemy Mine:

Request details: What I love most about this film is its playing around with gender conventions. I'd love to see a story focusing on Davidge's feelings about Jerry's dual gender, and what it means to their relationship. Domesticity, romantic and sexual feelings would be awesome, but interspecies porn might be a little out of my comfort zone *g*
Yay genderbending! *g* This film is a nostalgic childhood thing for me: I was so fascinated, as a kid, by Jeriba and his dual/non -gender. Anything exploring Davidges reactions/thoughts/feelings towards Jerry, and Jerry's confusion about human genders would be awesome. Maybe Davidge could be, at first, unsettled by, and then come to terms with, Jerry's dual gender, and maybe even be a little bit intrigued by it? I would love to see domesticity and affection between them, I would love to see both of them having revelations and moving towards acknowledging each other's differences, and to see them be respectful of - and caring towards - each other.
Oookay, I guess that’s enough for now ;) I hope you find some of this useful, and I hope I haven’t scared you - I’m really easy to please, I promise! *g* Oh, and I have recently learned the difficult skill of tagging posts, so now all of my previous secret santa letters are tagged, if you would like some more inspiration...
